Family Support

Family Support is an Essential Part of the Recovery Journey

The trauma and challenges of serious mental illness and other challenges such as co-occurring substance use and IDD impact both the person in recovery and his/her family. Few of us are prepared for the stress, confusion, fear and lack of access to information and support for a person receiving psychiatric treatment.

From the moment a family member is in contact with Project Transition, we want to understand and learn about their experience. We strive to create a partnership between the member, their family and our staff. Loved ones often provide valuable perspectives that help us get to know the person we will be working with. We also know that supporting a family provides additional benefit to the member and their Recovery journey.

Initially, we partner with families to gather information about the potential member’s condition and treatment history. This is also a time for us to listen, learn, and provide support. Once a member has been admitted into one of our communities or services, it is important that we get to know each other. This is best accomplished by conducting a family meeting that provides orientation to Project Transition, answers key questions and includes goal setting that addresses our expectations for one another. Regular family meetings are an essential part of supporting the recovery of our members. In addition, counselors and other staff are available for phone conversations and coaching as needed.

The Program Social Worker is a ready resource for families seeking information and support. Regular family meetings and educational supports are provided to enhance both communication and support of the member’s recovery.
